What's up on February 29th, 2004?

Ah, leap year. Nature's way of telling us that we don't really know how to count.

Anyway, to kick off March in style, I've started a new section - PlayThings! (I know, it's a weak title. I'm open to suggestions.) Basically, I've discovered that I need an area where I can spout off on all things vaguely related to theatre and playwrighting. Don't worry, I guarantee to drift off-topic as often as possible. Speaking of topics, they'll be all over the map, from the future of theatre to musings on competitions to whether it's possible to be a and a writer at the same time. Anyway, there's one essay in there now, so please check it out. More are a-coming.

In the meantime...

My production of "A Curtain Call to Arms" took first place at the Wilmington Drama League's One-Act Festival. It's quite an honor, because every play was strong - in fact, I think the award is telling of how many "theatre people" come to see the one-acts, since it speaks to them. Anyway, the play will represent the WDL at the ACT State Festival in Middletown on March 27th. Oddly enough, two of my other plays will be there as well - the Chrysalis Players version of "Lives in the Wind," which I'm directing, will be there, as will Kathy Buterbaugh's wonderful rendition of "The Boy Who was Born With a Tail." Another play at States is Kristyn Leigh Robinson's hilarious "We Need to Talk," so it's quite the local writer fest this year!

Speaking of "The Boy," it is now my first international prize-winner, since it won an Honorable Mention at the Theatre in the Raw's One-Act Play Contest! Theatre in the Raw is based in British Columbia, and they were kind enough to give me lots of great feedback on the play.

Finally, I just got word that the original Emerging Artists Theatre cast of "Job Strikes Back" will be performing "Job" at the New York 15-Minute Play Festival! The Festival is a wonderful thing, and I'm so happy to get one more chance at seeing this production. These guys are GOOD.

That's it for theatre news. Y'all be good
